The project “TECH-TOUR / Technology and tourism: augmented reality for the promotion of the Roman and Byzantine itineraries” aims to promote two historical trans-national EU cultural routes exploiting developed ICT tools.
The project was approved and co-funded by the European Union under the tender EU CIP (Competitiveness and Innovation). The project is implemented by a consortium of 12 partners.
Both itineraries are virtual routes since they link places and attractions based on common historical and cultural themes. TECH-TOUR routes are:
1) ITER ROMANUM, as represented at the Tabula Peutingeriana, connecting (among others) the following points: Aquileia, Quarto D’Altino, Concordia Sagittaria, Pola, Tarsatica, Emona, Celeia, Poetovio, Mursa Maior, Sirmium, Singidunum, Viminacium, Felix Romuliana, Naissus; Via Annia (part of the Roman and Byzantine itinerary)
2) ITER BYZANTIUM, connects places of importance for the reign of Justinian I (527-565), esp. for his campaign of the ‘re-conquest’ of the West, led by generals Belisarius and Narses, among them: Rivoalto (Venice), Torcello, Grado, Salona, Rovigno, Pola, Capodistria, Pirano, Justiniana Prima (birth place of Justinian I) etc.
The emphasis shall be put on the unifying potential of these routes, connecting Western and the Eastern part of the Roman Empire, with its two capitals, Rome and Constantinople, reflected in the historical, cultural, military and economical importance of the routes. Today the cultural and historical unity of the EU is obscured and the shared cultural heritage is perceived as partialized, belonging not to the common EU background, but to the particular states on the route.
Mapping a new pan-European route as an unique and recognizable cultural product and connecting the selected points on the route into a unique system will help integration of the cultural heritage on the route, giving it its own European identity. Integration of the common cultural heritage on the route will reinforce the sense of the community and reinforce the connections among participating countries. Tourists and travellers on the route will realize that they are passing through unique cultural entity.
